[q]Your two worlds — couture and cuisine — seem separate on the surface. Where do they actually meet for you?[/q]

They've never felt separate to me. In couture, you're obsessing over a seam that no one will ever see. In a kitchen, you're doing the same thing with a broth base. The discipline is identical. The difference is that one lasts for decades in a wardrobe and the other disappears in minutes. I find that disappearing part beautiful.

[q]You work a lot for film and photography. How do you think about food as something visual?[/q]

On a set, the food is essentially costume. It has to read from the camera, carry a mood, tell you something about a character before anyone speaks. I've styled dishes that were never eaten. It sounds strange but it teaches you to separate the craft of making something from the need for it to be consumed. That's been useful everywhere in my life.

[q]What drew you to these frames in particular?[/q]

The weight. I picked them up and they felt considered. There's nothing extra. With glasses, you wear them all day — so they either become invisible in the best way, or they become an annoyance. These felt like they wanted to disappear into my face, and I mean that as the highest compliment.
